Immigration:
Immigration
We were founded as a nation of immigrant’s dreaming of a better life for ourselves and our families. Who are we to deny others that same dream? Our diversity is our strength. The new immigration policy, allowing wealth to now be used as a factor towards qualifying for immigration status, under-minds what this country was founded on. As stated on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Plan: Immediate pathway to citizenship for D.A.C.A. recipients. Develop a more accessible, realistic immigration policy that would lay out a process allow people to come to this country legally, easier. The citizenship test needs to be rewritten. It needs to be made current and include more about how this country operates and its laws; focusing less on our initial formation. I also believe that all high school students should be required to take and pass the same citizenship test, in order to graduate and gain the right to vote. We cannot demand immigrants, that want to come to this country, know more about our country than our own American students.
